Grinding is not complete root-system removal
A stump grinder uses a cutting wheel to reduce accessible wood into small grindings. The main stump and selected surface roots can be treated to an agreed depth. Most of the root system remains in the ground and decays over time.
Complete excavation removes more material but can disturb a much larger area and may require different equipment or another contractor. If the site is being built over or excavated, ask the relevant builder, engineer or landscaper what clearance is required before choosing a stump scope.
When grinding may suit
Stump grinding may suit when you need to prepare an area for lawn or a garden bed, remove a mowing or trip obstruction, reduce a stump following tree removal, or improve access to a defined part of the property.
Grinding may suit accessible stumps being reduced for lawns, garden beds or safer use of the area, but may not suit structural excavation, uncertain utilities or stumps entwined with structures.

What happens to the grindings?
Wood and soil mix during grinding, often producing more material than the original above-ground stump suggested. Options can include:

Some species can produce shoots from remaining roots. Grinding the stump does not guarantee that every root sucker will stop immediately. The response depends on the species and how the original tree was removed.
Plan the Finish Before Grinding
