What this service is

The purpose is to prepare a practical work scope and price for services such as pruning, removal, stump grinding or palm work. We look at the requested outcome, visible site constraints and the information needed to plan the job.

The written quote should state:

  • the tree, palm or stump to which it applies;
  • the proposed work;
  • access and site assumptions;
  • waste, timber, mulch or grindings treatment;
  • whether stump grinding is included;
  • exclusions and customer responsibilities;
  • permit or report assumptions;
  • price, GST treatment and quote validity.

What this service is not

A free quote or site visit does not normally include:

  • a comprehensive inspection of every tree on the property;
  • a detailed professional tree-risk assessment;
  • a diagnosis based on invasive or laboratory testing;
  • a written arborist report;
  • a development-impact assessment;
  • a council permit application;
  • a guarantee that a tree cannot fail.

Useful information makes the first review clearer and helps define whether a visit is required.

  1. The suburb and property type.
  2. Photos of the whole tree and the surrounding area.
  3. Close photos of the concern, taken only from a safe location.
  4. The outcome you want: clearance, deadwood, reduction, removal, stump finish or advice.
  5. Approximate access width and any steps, slopes or locked areas.
  6. Nearby roofs, fences, pools, roads, powerlines or neighbouring property.
  7. Any council letter, permit condition or report brief.
  8. Your preferred contact method.
Take photos safely. Do not climb, stand beneath a damaged branch or approach powerlines to obtain photos.

SITE REVIEW

When a site visit is useful

A visit may be needed where the tree is large or complex, access is uncertain, the requested pruning needs definition, the condition cannot be understood from photos, neighbouring property is involved, underground or overhead services may affect work, or a permit or report pathway needs clarification.

During the visit, the focus is the proposed job and the information reasonably visible at the time. If a separate defect or specialist issue is found, the next step should be explained rather than folded into an undefined “assessment”.

COMPARING QUOTES

Why quotes vary

Two quotes may describe different outcomes. Check pruning specification, stump scope, waste removal, access assumptions, permits, traffic controls, equipment, site protection and whether GST is included.

The cheapest number is not a saving if the scope does not match the result you need.

An AQF Level 3 production arborist and an AQF Level 5 consulting arborist perform different roles. A council may require a particular level or report format. Ask the council before commissioning the document.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Before you request a quote

Can you quote from photos?

Sometimes. Good photos and access details can be enough for a straightforward scope. A site visit may still be required before the price or method is confirmed.

Will you tell me whether the tree is dangerous?

We can respond to visible concerns within the agreed scope, but a quote visit is not a formal risk assessment. Immediate danger belongs with 000 or the relevant authority first.

Is a quote the same as council approval?

No. A quote does not grant permission. Check the relevant council and any planning controls.

Does the quote include stump grinding?

Only if it is written into the scope. Removal and grinding are separate.

What if the site is different on the day?

The provider and customer should pause and agree any material scope or price change before additional work proceeds.
