Tree felling safety: know when not to start

Tree felling can kill. Learn the red flags that require professionals, what to do near powerlines or storm damage, and how to prepare for safe tree work.

Tree felling is high-risk work. A falling trunk or branch can move faster and travel farther than an inexperienced person expects. Trees may be decayed, split, loaded by wind, entangled with other branches or storing energy in bent wood. Chainsaws, work at height, woodchippers, traffic and powerlines add separate hazards.

This page does not teach DIY felling cuts. Its purpose is to help you recognise when to keep clear and call the right help.

Do not attempt the work if any of these apply

  • The tree can strike a person, building, fence, road, vehicle or neighbouring property.

  • Powerlines or service wires are within or near the tree.

  • The tree is dead, storm-damaged, split, uprooting or hung up.

  • The tree leans and the lean is new, changing or unsupported.

  • There is not a clear, controlled fall area.

  • You would need to climb, use a ladder or cut above shoulder height.

  • The trunk is larger than ordinary ground-level garden work.

  • Branches are under tension or compression.

  • Wind, rain, poor light or unstable ground affects control.

  • You do not have task-specific competence, equipment, exclusion control and an emergency plan.

Buying or hiring a chainsaw does not make the job low risk.

Electricity can arc. Do not touch a tree, branch, fence, vehicle or equipment that may be energised. Do not assume a service wire is safe because it looks insulated.

Why felling direction can change

Tree movement is influenced by:

  • natural and new lean;

  • canopy weight and asymmetry;

  • wind;

  • fibre strength and decay;

  • cracks, cavities and included bark;

  • root anchorage and soil;

  • vines or entanglement;

  • previous failures;

  • cuts already made;

  • contact with nearby trees or structures.

An external glance cannot reveal every internal defect. Once cutting starts, support and loading change.

Sectional removal is also high-risk

Where there is no safe fall area, a tree may need to be dismantled piece by piece. That can involve climbing or specialist access, ropes, controlled lowering and coordination between workers on the ground and aloft.

Suspended pieces can swing, rotate or shock-load systems. This is not “felling, but smaller”.

What a professional plan should consider

Customers do not need to design the method, but they can ask how the provider will address:

  • competence and roles;

  • tree and site inspection;

  • exclusion zones;

  • powerline and utility controls;

  • public, traffic and property protection;

  • access and ground conditions;

  • cutting and lowering sequence;

  • equipment inspection and suitability;

  • communication;

  • emergency and aerial-rescue arrangements where relevant;

  • debris, logs and stump scope.

Ask for a written quote and current evidence relevant to the work.

Prepare the property safely

Follow the provider’s site instructions. This may include moving vehicles and furniture, keeping pets inside, notifying tenants or neighbours, arranging access and preventing people from entering the work area.

Do not move objects from beneath an unstable tree or hanging branch unless the provider or authority says the area is safe.

Council and wildlife checks still matter

Safety urgency and permit processes are not identical. Where safe, preserve photos and records and contact the relevant council. Active nests, hollows or animals can require work to pause and specialist advice to be obtained.

Dangerous myths

“It will fall towards the lean”

Lean matters, but wind, canopy distribution, decay, roots and cutting can alter movement. It is not a guarantee.

“A rope tied to a car will pull it safely”

Vehicles, anchor points, ropes and tree parts can fail or move unpredictably. Improvised pulling can put people in the line of fire.

“If the tree is already on the ground, it is safe”

Bent limbs, hung-up sections and compressed trunks can release hidden tension.

“Power is out, so the line is dead”

Treat lines as live until the electricity distributor confirms otherwise.

“A small chainsaw means a small risk”

The energy in the tree and the position of the operator determine risk, not only the saw size.

Safety questions

Can I cut a small branch from the ground?

Simple hand-tool pruning may be ordinary garden work where the branch is small, reachable and cannot strike a person, property or line. If there is doubt, stop.

Can I use a ladder and chainsaw?

This combines an unstable platform, cutting force and a falling object. It is not a safe homeowner workaround.

What if a branch is on my roof?

Keep people away from the affected area. Consider structural and electrical hazards, contact the insurer and relevant emergency authority, and do not climb onto the roof beneath damaged timber.

Do I need a permit in an emergency?

Requirements vary. Protect life first, then preserve evidence and contact the relevant council when safe.
