Choosing a shade tree for a Melbourne garden

A shade tree is a long-term space decision. The tree that looks modest at the nursery may eventually extend above the roof, across a boundary or into powerline clearances. Start with mature size, soil volume and the direction of the shade—not the label “fast growing”.
Map the site before choosing
Record:
available canopy width and height;
distance to buildings, boundaries, paving and drainage;
overhead lines and service wires;
likely underground services;
north, west and east orientation;
summer sun and winter shade objectives;
soil depth, drainage and compaction;
irrigation during establishment;
wind exposure and reflected heat;
space for roots and mulch.
Do not plant a tree beneath or close to powerlines on the assumption that future pruning will keep it small. Use the electricity distributor’s planting guidance for the location.

1. Shade where it is needed
Western shade can reduce harsh afternoon heat. Northern deciduous shade may admit more winter sun. Plot the likely canopy rather than planting directly beside the surface you want shaded.
2. Mature dimensions
Choose for the space the tree will have in 10, 20 and 30 years. Repeatedly reducing a naturally large tree to fit a tiny site creates cost and may compromise structure.
3. Rooting environment
Roots need oxygen, water and usable soil. Compacted fill, narrow cut-outs and constantly wet soil can limit establishment. Root behaviour is influenced by site conditions; no species can honestly be promised to have “no invasive roots”.
4. Climate and microclimate
Melbourne is not one uniform garden. Coastal exposure, frost pockets, heat-reflecting courtyards, rainfall and soil vary. Local nursery and council guidance should refine the choice.
5. Maintenance and ordinary debris

They can be useful, but branch density, orientation, leaf-out timing and mature placement affect the result.

“A large tree can be kept small by regular lopping”

Caring for an established shade tree
